AcousticaElectronica revamps structure and crew

After a year in the works, toUch Performance Art launched AcousticaElectronica at Oberon (Cambridge) in February. Now six months later, the show, combining classical music, dance and art into one huge immersion for an audience, is ready to go with a new structure and crew.

“Having those couple of shows was important to us learning how we can use aerial work and dancers,” said creative director Colin Thurmond. “It was an honor to sell out those shows in February.”

Thurmond said 100 people were turned away at the second show, and that the challenge of a sell-out crowd is that it makes the dance floor feel very busy. With a rotation of dancers, performers and musicians, a number of things delivered to the audience at once. The question, he said, is how to move people around and keep them safe while making it so they don’t miss things.

With that issue in mind for restructure, the new run of AcousticaElectronica will also involve new music and performers. Although the show is continuing with the concept of mixing classical music with electronic music, early summer auditions in Boston and New York City led to the addition of three new members to build the cast: two dancers and an aerialist from Philly who uses an LED hoop and does acro choreography. Also joining the crew is a stage combat choreographer to organize a dance combat theme.

“I’m really interested in challenging the performers to grow,” Thurmond said. “One way is spreading the music in a different direction. The last series had a trance feel. Now we’ll have trance, progressive house, and house, and we’ve inserted a drum & bass track and big electro banger club tracks.”

In addition to the three DJs from the previous run (David Day, Mike Swells, Randy Deshaies), John Barera, Will Monotone and Joe Bermudez will hit the decks. Rich Chwastiak (The WIG) also remains on board.

“There’s a narrative that links the whole night together,” Thurmond continued. “The last show had a really amazing vibe, and this time we are pushing for a more consistent through-line. At the end of the day, it’s all about having a really good dance party with really great music.”

The cast has spent a lot of time looking back to the last show for ways to improve and make everything even better.

“We listen to our audience and respond to what they want. It’s a really collaborative atmosphere; we try to bring on artists who are multiple threats.”

After one-year, GLOW Boston announces new show

GLOW Boston just hit its one-year anniversary, announcing a newly developed, more dramatic and higher-scale show called ILLUMINA Live. ILLUMINA is going to be the ultimate live experience - huge light shows, video sequences, dancers, live performers, and DJs spinning electro, house and remixes - combines into one enormous dance party.

DJ lineup includes White Rabbit’s Jay K & Damien Paul, Glowkids & Fuse and Aleka. Young London will also perform.

It all kicks off at House of Blues Boston on Friday, September 21. But this is only the beginning. ILLUMINA is now booking college campuses across the country for the 2012-2013 college tour.

Hosted by Sean M. Johnson with DJs Brent Covington and Taffy, Fur and Gold is a monthly party pounding indie rock/pop/dance, post-punk, ’80s, Britpop, underground, new wave, electro, and Euro hits.

With plans to celebrate its two-year anniversary fitted to a special theme based on a band, genre or time period, those involved decided to honor the Pet Shop Boys at tomorrow night’s party in appreciation of their contribution to electronic dance music (EDM) and pop culture through music and visuals. The Pet Shop Boys’ hits, remixes and collaborations will especially be featured.

The event, held at The Alley Bar, will also run a Pet Shop Boys costume contest and offer giveaways.

Boston as a whole is really talented; there are a lot of people who know their roots, their history, and are really experienced and providing a good direction for the patrons of Boston to follow. Boston is a young city, but I think the artists behind it, from young to old, are tremendously talented. AcousticaElectronica: a new approach

Presented by toUch Performance Art, AcousticaElectronica has been a project building in Boston for the past year to combine classical music, classical dance and art into one huge immersion for an audience.

“It’s bringing the world of electronic dance music together with the classical music that we love in a very innovative way through music and dance,” said Colin Thurmond, co-founder and artist director.

The show kicked off its first performance last Friday at Oberon and is booked again this Friday. The past nine months have been spent catering the show to the location, a space having never been used for an electronic music event.

“They call Oberon a theater club, and I think that’s a nice way to define it because it’s halfway between a theater performance space and a real nightclub,” said Thurmond.

“[The show] is something people can watch on stage but also pulls the audience into the performance,” added Rich Chwastiak, one of the performers. “You’re going to see stuff happening around you, drawing your attention to all 360 degrees of the room and also through the audience. You’re not only going to dance and have a good time, but you’re also part of the show.”

The five-hour event begins with live DJ sets, followed by the classical-meets-electronic music performance and ending with closing DJs. Both opening and closing sets are lineups of local talent: David Day and George Vala played last week; Mike Swells and Randy Deshaies are on this week.

“We’re honored to have some of Boston’s best talent, guys who have been pioneering the electronic music scene,” said Thurmond. “I think there’s a real sense of collaboration in the city. I think we have an absolute dream team.”

“I heard about [the project] last year, followed the maturation of it and have seen these guys take it to the next level,” said Swells. “I think it was really well-received last year during the Together festival and it’s exciting to me to see [the show] come into a place like the Oberon, which, based on what I can tell, is the perfect venue for this sort of experience where there’s no separation between the audience and the performers. Everyone is sort of in the middle. It’s pretty exciting to see it coming to this level a year later and seeing it more refined and seeing other people involved.”

Also featured are dancers joining together to re-invent the typical go-go style, blending it with modern ballet improvised movement.

The performance between opening and closing DJ sets is one fusing live musicians and instruments to combine classical and electronic music. Chwastiak, aka The Wig, incorporates live performance elements into a live DJ set. The classically-trained percussionist with a Master’s from the New England Conservatory uses CDJs, an instrument called the drumKAT and LED-tipped drum sticks to mix live with other professionally-trained classical musicians on stage.

He compares the show to live performances like those of Trentemøller and SBTRKT, who also demonstrate live musicians and instruments tied through not only electronics but also acoustics.

“We’re working with a composer named Athena Adamopoulos and try to do a combo of not just classical stuff, but also things people will know,” said Thurmond. “We create great electronic music that pays homage to our roots as classical artists.”
